The development of modern medicine towards clinical activity based on the principle of "high intensity care" makes this unit the only one in this University able to develop research and teaching programmes aimed at caring for critical or fragile patients. In this sphere, the unit has the key objective to control physical and spiritual suffering, with practical programmes integrating highly technological intensive care with palliative and pain management care. Anaesthesiology, intensive care and algology are correlated and develop their teaching, research and assistance activities in collaboration with other disciplines such as clinical pharmacology, oncology, psychology and others.
